About the Author

EXPERIENCE

Arthur W. (Rusty) Myers III is a graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and has a Master’s in Biblical Studies from Liberty University. He is a law enforcement leader with more than thirty years of experience in policing (training and organizational leadership). Over the course of his career, he has served in roles ranging from patrol officer to command staff, including extensive work in officer training, professional development, and leadership education.

For several years, Myers served as the training commander of the Charleston Police Department. He was responsible for developing and delivering instruction to officers on ethics, use-of-force review, procedural justice, leadership, and professional accountability. His career has included supervising complex investigations, managing critical incidents, and mentoring officers at multiple stages of their careers.

While at the Summerville Police Department, he was the Internal Affairs inspector and created the Summerville Police Leadership series. This was a week-long study in leadership for all officers, from private to chief, based on his experiences that are largely detailed in this book. He resides in Summerville, SC, with his wife, Ellen, who is his hero.

Myers currently serves as Deputy Chief of Police at a South Carolina University Department of Public Safety.

WHY TATTERED

The experiences described in this book, including navigating the internal affairs process, administrative leave, termination, and eventual vindication, shaped Myers’s perspective on leadership, institutional responsibility, and officer wellness. His work today focuses on supporting first responders, improving leadership practices within policing, and encouraging open conversations about resilience, mental health, and integrity in public service.

OTHER WORK

His first work, written when Tattered got too heavy, is "Confession of Justus, A Tale of the Christ." This work of historical fiction, written as a recovered testament, follows the Centurion Justus Longinus. He is a man embittered toward the gods as they took his son to save his legion. Justus cannot forgive himself and wonders what god would call on a man to sacrifice his son to save others. At Golgotha, he meets another Son, sacrificed by his Father to save mankind.
